The exam is mandatory for secondary grade teachers and graduate assistants appointed for government, aided and unaided institutions on and after August 23, 2010, in accordance with the guidelines framed by the National Council for Teacher Education as part of the Right to Education (RTE) Act.

The TRB, in a press release, has also clarified that those appointed prior to the date of notification issued by the National Council for Teacher Education, which is August 23, 2010, are not required to write TET The website http://trb.tn.nic.in has the list of candidates who have applied for TET. The release also added that those seeking any clarification may approach the TRB with photo copy of their application forms and bank challan for the fees paid.
