Petitioner Rizwana Khatoon pleaded in court to not be sacked despite failing twice in the TET but was dismissed. During the proceedings the principal secretary of the education department was asked to inform all such teachers that they would be sacked in a week. The education department will be following through with the order.
The state government sacked 151 teachers in 2012 after they failed to pass two competency tests one after the other. The teachers' General Knowledge, Mathematics, English and Hindi up to the level of Class Five were tested. TOI reported officials saying,"The test was to check teachers' ability to teach. If they failed to clear it, they should either improve or leave the profession."
The teachers who failed once in the test still have hope to pass the next one but those who fail twice will end up losing their jobs. These eligibility tests have been regularly held in Bihar since 2008. In 2013, more than 10,000 teachers under contract failed to perform and could not pass the eligibility test.
The Bihar TET's eligibility criteria are that the candidates must score 45% in the TET test itself. They should also have gotten 50% in their Senior Secondary examination. The candidates must also possess a 2 year Diploma in Elementary Education, Bachelors in Elementary Education having completed 4 years or a 2 year Diploma in Special Education. Candidates with a B.A degree or a B.Sc degree must score a minimum of 50% marks to be eligible.
