MHTET : Practising teachers need not take RTE eligibility test: govt

MHTET : Practising teachers need not take RTE eligibility test: govt

Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test News :

In what could be an attempt to dilute standards set for teachers under the Right To Education Act, the state government has said only new teachers need appear for the teachers’ eligibility test (TET), on July 28.

A fresh circular from the exam council, Pune, said currently-serving school teachers will not be required to appear for the TET. “The government has withdrawn the clause in the government resolution dated February 13 that all school teachers will have to clear TET by 2015,” said a senior education official.

According to the RTE Act, every teacher, those currently working in schools and those planning to join the profession, will have to clear the TET. The test aims to implement a national standard of teaching quality in schools across the country. While aspiring teachers will need a certificate showing they have cleared the test, those already working as teachers will have to pass the test to get a promotion or additional work responsibilities.

However, education experts feel all teachers should take the test, especially because they have fared poorly in similar government exams in the last two years.  HT had reported on April 7 that only 0.4% of city teachers who took the test in 2012 cleared it. “This shows that quality teaching is lacking in our schools across India. But without TET how will we identify substandard teachers?” said Arundhati Chavan, principal, Swayam Siddhi College of Education, Bhiwandi.

Experts said exempting current teachers would not improve the quality of teaching. “Teachers working for several years do not upgrade their knowledge. The new test would force them to study topics relevant to the current generation of students,” said Basanti Roy, former secretary of the state board, Mumbai division.

The decision to exempt currently-serving teachers was taken after teachers’ associations petitioned the state. “Teachers currently employed in schools have the required qualifications and have attended regular in-service training . So why should they appear for a separate test?” said Anil Bornare, secretary, Maharashtra Teachers’ Association.

Teacher Eligibility Test introduced to maintain Quality in Education, And it is highly needed to improve teachers quality else this test will be meaningless.

In Last CTET exam, Teachers perform badly in examination.

For future of child education, Quality in Education is Mandatory. We do not think it is ONLY A JOB, We Should think in terms of Future of Country / Child Education.

There are several other jobs, which can serve to them by compromising QUALITY.
But TEACHERS QUALITY SHOULD NOT BE COMPROMISE AT ANY COST, BECAUSE IT'S A NATION BUILDING JOB.

Eligibility test must to be a teacher now

TET|National Council for Teacher Education|Eligibility test for teacher|DEd
MUMBAI: Cracking the diploma in education (DEd) or pursuing a bachelor's in education (BEd) will not be enough to be a teacher anymore. The state government has passed a resolution making it mandatory for every aspiring schoolteacher to clear a licentiate exam.

In a bid to better quality in schools, the state will hold the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) to filter the best candidates. Public and private schools can recruit only those teachers who have cleared this exam.

Several states already have such a test in place and Maharashtra has passed this resolution keeping in mind the provisions laid down in the Right to Education Act.

"The TET is henceforth mandatory for those who want to join a school as a teacher," said additional chief secretary JS Saharia. "A good teacher makes all the difference. We have built enough schools. Now we ought to provide good quality schooling and a qualified teacher can bring excellence to the classroom," he said.

Eventually, every state will have to be holding its own TET. The test is aimed at bringing in national standards and benchmarking teacher quality in the recruitment process. It is meant to induce teacher education institutes, and students of these institutes, to further their performance standards.

In the TET, every candidate will be tested on child development, pedagogy and two languages. Knowledge of mathematics and environmental studies will be checked for those wanting to be posted in primary classes (till class V). In case of those wanting to teach senior students, they will also be tested on the subject they would like to teach.

The National Council for Teacher Education stipulates that a person who scores 60% or more in the TET will be considered as qualified.

Questions will be multiple choice with four alternatives; each question will carry a mark. There will be no negative marking. There will be two papers of the TET. Those intending to teach students in classes I to V need to sit only for Paper I. Paper II will be for the teachers of senior classes, VI to VIII. Candidates wanting to teach elementary and senior school need to take both papers.

Apart from the test, Maharashtra has also set minimum academic and professional qualifications for aspiring teachers. For primary schoolteachers, it will be mandatory to complete high school and DEd, apart from clearing the TET. For those wanting to join the senior school, candidates must complete their graduation and BEd as well as crack the TET
