Karnataka TET / KARTET : Classes have begun, but where are the teachers ?

Karnataka TET / KARTET :

Classes have begun, but where are the teachers ?

Over a month after the academic year commenced, the State government is waking up to the shortage of teachers; it has decided to recruit 12,368 guest teachers in government primary and high schools as well as pre-university colleges on an ad hoc basis.

However, the move has been criticised by officials who say that the process should have been carried out at the beginning of the academic year. The guest teachers will be appointed only for a few months, as the process of appointment of permanent teachers would be completed in two months.

The shortage has forced combining of different classes in several schools. In some places, students, who are class monitors, are busy managing the class.

Sources in the department said once the permanent teachers are recruited, the guest teachers will be relieved from their duties. However, the catch here is that there is likely to be a shortage of primary school teachers even after recruitment of permanent staff as the number who have qualified for recruitment are too few.

Sources pointed out that it is unlikely that the posts of all teachers would be filled for primary posts as only 3,503 teachers have cleared the Teacher Eligibility Test (Paper 1) that is mandatory for appointment from classes one to five. In Paper 2, which is mandatory for classes six to eight, 22,215 teachers have cleared the test.

After clearing this exam, aspirants will have to pass the Common Entrance Test, the results of which are expected next week.

Another TET

In order to help more candidates clear the examination, the Department of Public Instruction has decided to conduct another Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for primary school teacher aspirants on September 27. The move has been widely criticised by aspirants who cleared the TET held in June 2014.

“When they have not recruited even those who had cleared TET last year, what is the purpose of holding another one?” a candidate who cleared the exam said.
