15581 teachers' vacancies in state of Aasam - Fill up through TET (Teacher Eligibility Test)
GUWAHATI: Even as the state government is preparing to properly implement the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, which would require a large number of additional teachers, schools in the state are reeling under an acute shortage of teachers.
In reply to a question by Asom Gana Parishad legislator Phani Bhushan Choudhury in the house on Thursday, state education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said according to the primary education budget for 2012-13, at present there are 99,025 teachers in lower and upper primary schools but 15,581 posts are still vacant.
"According to the district information system for education (DISE) 2010-11, there is a requirement of 29,888 teachers at the lower primary level and another 42,376 at the upper primary level. We also will require 10,140 part-time teachers," Sarma said.
The minister said the state government has obtained a sanction for filling up 25,751 posts of full-time teachers and 6,081 posts of part-time teachers (art, physical exercise and crafts). "We are preparing to fill up these posts through the teachers eligibility test (TET) as prescribed by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE)," he said.
Sarma added the process of appointment of these teachers will have to be completed by April 1, 2013 as directed by the Act. "This time, 3,69,113 candidates have applied for TET," he said.
