CHANDIGARH: In a new turnout, the Punjab government which had earlier asked the EGS teachers to clear Teacher Eligibility Test(TET) as per the guidelines of National Educational Policy asked the Centre on Tuesday to relax the criterion of TET for EGS teachers as a onetime measure.

Education minister, Sewa Singh Sekhwan quoting Parkash Singh Badal said that the Chief minister was fully sympathetic towards the problems of the teachers but due to the laws of the central government, Badal is not able to help them. He further added that Badal had assured the teachers that the state government will try its best to facilitate the recruitment of teachers by seeking a onetime relaxation from the centre government.

On the other hand, the teachers union again blocked the Malout Chandigarh national highway (NH-15) at Fakkarsar Thehri village near Gidderbaha on Tuesday. Meanwhile, two agitating teachers namely, Kulvir Singh and Nachattar Singh tried to jump into the Rajasthan feeder canal here.

Punjab TET -:  Slapgate agitation: Govt on backfoot as teachers warn suicide
GIDDERBAHA: The government went on the backfoot on Tuesday after the 'slapgate' agitation turned ugly with members of employment gurantee scheme (EGS) teachers' union blocking traffic on two bridges of Rajasthan and Sirhind feeder canals and threatening to commit suicide by jumping into them. The teachers were forced on the warpath after the union failed to reach any compromise with the state government on Monday.
The suicide threat seemed to work temporarily for the union as the SAD-BJP government issued a statement saying it had approached "the Centre to suitably relax the condition of TET (Teacher Eligibility Test) for recruitment of the EGS teachers in the state as a one-time measure".
Quoting education minister S S Sekhwan, the statement claimed that the "government was keen to help the teachers. But the condition of TET laid by the government of India for all such recruitment came in the way. Any order issued by us in violation of the standing rules would render the order infructuous and illegal, landing both the teachers and the government in an embarrassing position".
The turnaround came after teachers laid siege to bridges on Rajasthan feeder and Sirhind feeder for 4 hours.
Two teachers had stationed themselves on the bridge, declaring that they were ready to jump into the water if the government did not accede to their demands by evening. Cops were requisitioned at the spot but they failed to persuade the teachers to come down and lift the blockade.
The dharna was finally withdrawn after the teachers got a word from the government. However, the agitation has not been called off completely, as they plan to hold their protest on Wednesday too. "We do not believe the government's assurance unless the promise is translated into reality, said union leader Pritpal Singh. The union is scheduled to meet the government again on December 18 for a final round of talks.
