Govt can’t tweak TET rule: HC

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat high court has held that the state government's decision of not permitting students of certain subjected to take Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) was wrong and it cannot modify the rules laid down by a central regulatory authority.
The court's decision may be advantageous to many students who have been deprived of the eligibility test. Clearing TET has become mandatory for a candidate to become a teacher.

The state government did not permit students having graduated in subjects like home science, sociology and psychology and with degree of BEd to appear in TET, as its examination form did not reveal these subjects in a particular category.
The candidates moved court by filing different petitions, which came to be head by a bench of acting chief justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and justice J B Pardiwala. The candidates argued that the state government cannot deprive one class of students of taking eligibility test on the ground of further classification in qualification criteria.
After hearing the case, the bench concluded that the state government cannot make any changes in the eligibility criteria as laid down by the National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE). The court observed that the state government should not further the classification after it was once done by NCTE.
